Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits comprise 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPS25 gene encodes a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S25E family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in the cytoplasm, and multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
