Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The RPS19 gene encodes a component of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S19E family. Mutations in RPS19 cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA), characterized by reduced erythroid precursors. This gene may have extra-ribosomal functions related to erythropoietic differentiation and proliferation. Elevated expression of RPS19 has been observed in some primary colon carcinomas compared to normal tissues.
