Background
Ribosomes are organelles responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The RPS13 gene encodes a protein component of the 40S subunit, belonging to the S15P family of ribosomal proteins, and is primarily localized in the cytoplasm. It binds to 5.8S rRNA in rats, and its E. coli ortholog (ribosomal protein S15) functions in early ribosome assembly. This gene is co-transcribed with two U14 small nucleolar RNA genes located in its introns. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
