Background
Ribosomal protein S6 kinase B1 (RPS6KB1) is a member of the ribosomal S6 kinase family of serine/threonine kinases. This protein responds to mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) signaling to promote protein synthesis, cell growth, and cell proliferation. Its activity has been associated with various human cancers. Alternatively spliced transcript variants and different translation start sites result in isoforms with distinct subcellular localizations. Two pseudogenes for this gene exist on chromosome 17. (RefSeq, Jan 2013)
