Background
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. This gene encodes a ribosomal phosphoprotein that is a component of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L12P family. The encoded protein plays a key role in the elongation step of protein synthesis and is acidic, unlike most ribosomal proteins. Its C-terminal sequence is nearly identical to those of ribosomal phosphoproteins P0 and P1. P2 interacts with P0 and P1 to form a pentameric complex (P1/P2 dimers and a P0 monomer) located in the cytoplasm.
