Background
The RAD51 gene encodes a protein that is a member of the RAD51 family, highly similar to bacterial RecA and yeast Rad51. It plays a crucial role in homologous recombination and DNA repair. RAD51 interacts with ssDNA-binding protein RPA, RAD52, BRCA1, and BRCA2, which regulate its localization and DNA-binding ability. Disruption of these interactions, such as by BRCA2 inactivation, may lead to genomic instability and tumorigenesis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist for this gene (RefSeq, Aug 2009).
