Cellular Localization Nucleus. Colocalizes in promyelocytic leukemia protein nuclear bodies (PML-NB) with CREB3 and HCFC1.

Background

  • Function: Strongly activates transcription when bound to HCFC1. Suppresses HSV protein expression in infected cells in an HCFC1-dependent manner. Also suppresses HCFC1-dependent transcriptional activation by CREB3 and reduces CREB3 levels in the cell.
  • Miscellaneous: Named "Zhangfei" after a legendary Chinese warrior contemporary with Luman (circa 220 AD).
  • Similarity: Belongs to the bZIP family, ATF subfamily. Contains one bZIP domain.
  • Subcellular Location: Colocalizes at punctate nuclear structures with CREB3 and HCFC1.
  • Subunit: Interacts with HCFC1, causing suppression of CREB3 transcriptional activity.
  • Tissue Specificity: In adults, most abundant in heart, liver, and skeletal muscle; moderate in kidney and pancreas; barely detectable in lungs. In fetal tissues, highest in kidney, low in heart, lung, and liver.
