Background

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, known to regulate various cellular processes such as growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, and oncogenic transformation. The N-terminal region contains two tandem Src homolog (SH2) domains that mediate interaction with phospho-tyrosine substrates. Expressed mainly in hematopoietic cells, SHP-1 acts as a key regulator of multiple signaling pathways and dephosphorylates various phospho-proteins involved in hematopoietic signaling. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
