Background
Potassium channels are among the most complex voltage-gated ion channels in terms of function and structure. They regulate neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
The KCNT1 gene encodes a sodium-activated potassium channel subunit involved in ion conductance and developmental signaling pathways. Mutations in KCNT1 are associated with early-onset epileptic disorders such as malignant migrating partial seizures of infancy and autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, Dec 2012)
