Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the BCL-2 family, known as regulators of programmed cell death. This protein promotes apoptosis by forming heterodimers with BCL-xL and BCL-2, counteracting their anti-apoptotic effects. Its proapoptotic activity is regulated through phosphorylation. Protein kinases such as AKT and MAP kinase, as well as protein phosphatase calcineurin, are involved in its regulation. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same isoform.
