Background
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine- and threonine-specific protein kinases activated by calcium and diacylglycerol. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and are involved in multiple cellular signaling pathways. They also act as receptors for phorbol esters, known tumor promoters. Each PKC isoform has distinct expression and roles in cells. PKC δ, encoded by this gene, is implicated in B cell signaling and regulation of growth, apoptosis, and differentiation across various cell types. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
