Background
The AXL gene encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase that is part of the Tyro3-Axl-Mer (TAM) family. Its extracellular domain contains two immunoglobulin-like motifs followed by two fibronectin type-III motifs. AXL transduces signals from the extracellular matrix into the cytoplasm by binding to the vitamin K-dependent protein Gas6. This signaling pathway is involved in cellular processes such as growth, migration, aggregation, and anti-inflammatory responses. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
