Background

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) phosphorylates the inositol ring of phosphatidylinositol at the 3-prime position. The enzyme consists of a 110 kDa catalytic subunit and regulatory subunits of 85, 55, or 50 kDa. This gene encodes the 85 kDa regulatory subunit, which plays an important role in insulin-mediated metabolic actions. Mutations in this gene have been associated with insulin resistance. Alternative splicing results in four transcript variants encoding different isoforms. (RefSeq, Jun 2011)
