Target Information

The cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family of proteins functions as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane and resulting in water production.
The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer, each monomer containing 13 subunits (mitochondrial and nuclear).
COX5 is a heme A-containing chain that converts one molecule of oxygen and four molecules of hydrogen to two molecules of water.
Two isoforms exist: COX5a (aerobic) and COX5b (hypoxic).

  • COX5a transcription increases under high oxygen conditions.
  • COX5b transcription increases under low oxygen conditions to maximize COX apoenzyme turnover.
