Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which are signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways. SMAD1 mediates signals of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation. It is targeted by SMURF1 and SMURF2 E3 ubiquitin ligases for ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
