Target Information

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by adding the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme includes a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (encoded by TERT) and an RNA component serving as the template. Telomerase expression is typically repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Deregulation may contribute to oncogenesis. In mice, telomerase may also participate in chromosomal repair by synthesizing telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks. Multiple alternatively spliced isoforms of TERT have been identified.
