Target Information
In eukaryotes, phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues regulate numerous cellular functions such as division, homeostasis, and apoptosis. Protein phosphatases play a crucial role in these processes and generally form trimeric holoenzymes composed of regulatory, variable, and catalytic subunits. Major families of catalytic subunits include PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin), and PP2C, with PPX (PP4) as a putative member of a novel family. The PP2A family consists of subfamily members PP2A alpha and PP2A beta. The PP2A catalytic subunit associates with diverse regulatory subunits, including PP2A-A alpha and -A beta, PP2A-B alpha and -B beta, PP2A-C alpha and -C beta, and PP2A-B56 alpha and -B56 beta.
