PCCA 단백질은 홀수 사슬 지방산, 이소류신, 트레오닌, 메티오닌, 발린의 대사 경로에서 핵심 효소로 작용합니다.
이 단백질은 미토콘드리아 매트릭스에 위치하며, 6개의 biotin 함유 α 소단위체와 6개의 β 소단위체로 구성된 12량체(dodecamer)로 존재합니다.
PCCA 유전자의 결함은 Propionic Acidemia Type I (PA-1)을 유발하며, 이는 구토, 무기력, 케톤혈증, 호중구감소증, 혈소판감소증, 저감마글로불린혈증, 발달지연, 단백질 불내성 등의 증상을 보이는 치명적 질환입니다.
