Target Information

Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly in late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It associates with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and the nucleolus via its forkhead-associated (FHA) domain. Ki-67 shows cell cycle-dependent localization: perinucleolar in G1, nuclear matrix in G2, and chromosomal during mitosis. It serves as a proliferation marker since it is absent in G0 cells and increases from G1 through M phase. Ki-67 antibodies are used to determine the proliferative fraction in neoplasms, with prognostic value comparable to thymidine-labelling index. Low Ki-67 index correlates with histologically low-grade tumors. It is routinely used as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.
