Target Information
UCP4 (Uncoupling Protein 4) is a 323 amino acid mitochondrial carrier protein belonging to the large mitochondrial substrate carrier family with three Solcar repeats. It facilitates anion transfer across the mitochondrial membrane and proton re-entry, reducing mitochondrial membrane potential and contributing to thermoregulatory heat production. UCP4 uncouples oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat. It is primarily expressed in adult and fetal brain, with lower levels in spinal cord, corpus callosum, and substantia nigra.
