Target Information
Ferritin is a ubiquitous and highly conserved protein that plays a major role in iron homeostasis. It is a holoenzyme shell (~450 kDa) composed of 24 subunits (H and L types) and can store up to 4,500 atoms of ferric iron.
The ratio of H to L subunits varies depending on tissue type and physiological state. Ferritin functions as part of the iron regulatory protein family, including transferrin and transferrin receptor, and contributes to cellular defense against stress and inflammation.
Ferritin is mainly found in the liver, spleen, kidney, and heart, with small amounts in blood. Blood ferritin levels indicate the amount of iron stored in the body.
