Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and recognizes the sugar-phosphate backbone of double-stranded DNA.
It functions as a transcription factor regulating nuclear gene expression by binding to MARs (Matrix Attachment Regions) and inducing chromatin-loop remodeling.
SATB2 also serves as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes, recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) to promoters and enhancers.
It is essential for the initiation of upper-layer neuron-specific gene expression and suppression of deep-layer neuron genes, likely via modulation of BCL11B expression.
SATB2 acts as a repressor of Ctip2 and plays a key role in corticocortical connection development.
Mutations in SATB2 are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
