Target Information

IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon family member found exclusively in vertebrates. It interacts with its receptor to activate signaling pathways involved in innate immune defense against viral infections.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms, along with beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa types. Homologous molecules exist in mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced mainly by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFN alpha plays a key role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity. Dysfunction is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
