Target Information
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s. About 1% of people over age 65 and 3% over age 75 are affected. Mutations in Park2 are the most common cause identified to date. Park2 may play a role in the ubiquitin-mediated proteolytic pathway, and mutations cause autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism. Alternative splicing produces three products of undetermined function. Panneuronal expression of Parkin substrate Pael-R causes age-dependent selective degeneration of Drosophila dopaminergic neurons; coexpression of Parkin degrades Pael-R and suppresses its toxicity.
