Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including the neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation is one of the major degradative pathways for catecholamine transmitters.
COMT also plays a role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used for treating hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease. It exists in two forms: soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT), differing in their N-terminal regions. Multiple transcript variants arise from alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
