Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The latter class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintains transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, making crystallins extremely stable.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families. Beta and gamma crystallins form a superfamily. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are differentially regulated after early development.
This gene encodes the most significant gamma-crystallin in adult eye lens tissue. Aging or mutations in specific genes can lead to cataract formation.
