Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. They are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals.
