Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition — opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S2 family. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed.
