Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility and cytoskeleton maintenance.
Three main groups of actin isoforms exist in vertebrates: alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha actins: Found in muscle tissues, major components of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins: Co-exist in most cell types as cytoskeletal components and mediators of internal cell motility.
Actin gamma 1 (ACTG1) is a cytoplasmic actin found in all cell types.
Mutations in this gene are associated with DFNA20/26 (autosomal dominant non-syndromic progressive hearing loss) and Baraitser-Winter syndrome.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
