Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike (S) protein is essential for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a key target for antibody, inhibitor, and vaccine development.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors.
SARS-CoV-2 RBD exhibits significantly higher binding affinity to ACE2 than the SARS-CoV RBD.
The S1 subunit contains the RBD that specifically recognizes ACE2 on target cells.
