Target Information
Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), also known as Human herpes virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2), are widespread and contagious among humans.
HSV-1 is typically associated with cold sores, while HSV-2 is responsible for most genital herpes infections.
Transmission occurs when an infected individual is shedding the virus.
Herpes virions contain a large double-stranded, linear DNA genome enclosed within a capsid and surrounded by a viral envelope.
Different HSV strains encode over 70 open reading frames (ORFs).
HSV has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
