Target Information
ATF7 plays important functions in early cell signaling. It binds the cAMP response element (CRE) (consensus: 5'-GTGACGT[AG][AG]-3'), a sequence found in many viral and cellular promoters. It acts as an activator of the NF-ELAM1/delta-A site of the E-selectin promoter. Although it lacks intrinsic transcriptional activity, ATF7 activates transcription when forming heterodimers with JUN or FOS. It can also bind TRE promoter sequences in complex with JUN family members.
Isoform 4 (ATF-A0) functions as a dominant repressor of the E-selectin/NF-ELAM1/delta-A promoter, while Isoform 5 (ATF-4) negatively regulates ATF2 and ATF7 transcriptional activities, possibly through cytoplasmic sequestration of the Thr-53 phosphorylating kinase, preventing activation.
