Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR plays a key role in the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also functions in nonreproductive tissues including muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It acts as a phosphoprotein regulating MAP kinase signaling. Dysregulation of AR signaling is associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in AR can cause complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
