Target Information
The PER3 gene belongs to the Period family and is expressed in a circadian pattern in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the primary circadian pacemaker in the mammalian brain. It encodes components of circadian rhythms related to locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior.
PER3 is upregulated by CLOCK/ARNTL heterodimers and represses this upregulation via a feedback loop involving PER/CRY heterodimers.
Polymorphisms in PER3 have been associated with sleep disorders. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
