Target Information

Peroxiredoxin (Prx) is a growing peroxidase family whose mammalian members are associated with cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Many isoforms (about 50 proteins) share amino acid sequence homology, contain active site cysteine residues, and exhibit thiol-specific antioxidant activity across all kingdoms.
Mammalian Prx includes six members grouped into typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys, and 1-Cys Prx. Except for Prx VI, which belongs to the 1-Cys subgroup, the other five 2-Cys Prx isotypes exhibit thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase (TPx) activity using thioredoxin, thioredoxin reductase, and NADPH as a reducing system. Mammalian Prxs are 20–30 kDa in size and vary in subcellular localization: Prx I, II, and VI in cytosol; Prx III in mitochondria; Prx IV in ER and secretion; and Prx V distributed in peroxisome, mitochondria, and cytosol.
