Target Information
The GM-CSF (CSF2) gene encodes a cytokine that regulates the production, differentiation, and function of macrophages and granulocytes. The active form exists as a homodimer in the extracellular space.
This gene is located in the chromosome region 5q31, associated with interstitial deletions in 5q- syndrome and acute myelogenous leukemia. Other genes in this cluster include IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13.
GM-CSF is involved in promoting tissue inflammation, and elevated levels have been observed in SARS-CoV-2 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Mice lacking this gene or its receptor develop pulmonary alveolar proteinosis.
