Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are involved in growth and differentiation processes. BMPs were originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo at extraskeletal sites.
BMP4 plays an important role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression has been linked to bone diseases such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three variants encoding an identical protein.
