Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a protein-to-rRNA ratio of approximately 75%. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 6p. Several transcript variants, both protein-coding and non-protein-coding, have been identified for this gene. (RefSeq, Jan 2016)
