Background
Platelet derived growth factor subunit B (PDGFB) is a member of the PDGF/VEGF protein family. The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to produce PDGF subunit B, which can form homodimers or heterodimers with PDGF subunit A. These dimers bind and activate PDGF receptor tyrosine kinases, influencing various developmental processes. Mutations in PDGFB are linked to meningioma, and chromosomal translocations involving this gene are associated with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, a rare skin tumor. Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variants.
