Background
This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase. Mitochondrial ATP synthase catalyzes ATP synthesis utilizing a proton gradient across the inner membrane during oxidative phosphorylation. The enzyme consists of two complexes: the soluble catalytic core (F1) and the membrane-spanning component (Fo). The catalytic portion includes five subunits (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon), while the proton channel comprises three subunits (a, b, c). ATP5D encodes the delta subunit of the catalytic core. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same isoform have been identified.
