Background

Nuclear factor kappa B subunit 1 (NFKB1) is a human gene encoding a 105 kDa protein that undergoes cotranslational processing by the 26S proteasome to yield a 50 kDa protein. The 105 kDa form acts as a Rel protein-specific transcription inhibitor, while the 50 kDa form serves as a DNA-binding subunit of the NF-κB complex. NF-κB is a transcription regulator activated by diverse stimuli such as cytokines, reactive oxygen species, UV irradiation, and bacterial or viral products. Activated NF-κB translocates to the nucleus to induce expression of genes involved in immune and inflammatory responses. Dysregulation of NF-κB activity is linked to inflammatory diseases and abnormal immune cell development.
