Background
Keratin 8 (KRT8) is a member of the type II keratin family located on chromosome 12. Type I and II keratins form intermediate filaments in epithelial cells. KRT8 typically dimerizes with keratin 18 to form filaments in simple epithelial cells, contributing to structural integrity and participating in signal transduction and differentiation. Mutations in this gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified (RefSeq, Jan 2012).
