Background
ADP ribosylation factor 4 (ARF4) is part of the human ARF gene family, encoding small GTP-binding proteins that activate ADP-ribosyltransferase activity of cholera toxin and are involved in vesicular trafficking and phospholipase D activation. The ARF family consists of 5 ARF proteins and 11 ARF-like proteins within the RAS superfamily. ARF proteins are divided into class I, II, and III; ARF4 belongs to class II. The ARF4 gene spans approximately 12 kb with six exons and five introns and is the most divergent member of the human ARFs. Conflicting map positions at 3p14 or 3p21 have been reported.
