Background
Potassium channels are present in most mammalian cells, where they participate in a wide range of physiological responses. The ROMK/Kir1.1 protein is an integral membrane protein functioning as an inward-rectifier potassium channel. It is activated by internal ATP and plays a key role in potassium homeostasis by preferentially allowing potassium influx. Mutations in this gene are associated with antenatal Bartter syndrome, characterized by salt wasting, hypokalemic alkalosis, hypercalciuria, and low blood pressure. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
