Target Information
Alpha actinins belong to the spectrin gene superfamily, which includes diverse cytoskeletal proteins such as alpha/beta spectrins and dystrophins.
Alpha actinin is an actin-binding protein with multiple roles across cell types:
- In nonmuscle cells, it is found along microfilament bundles and adherens-type junctions, linking actin to the membrane.
- In muscle cells (skeletal, cardiac, smooth), it localizes to the Z-disc or dense bodies, anchoring myofibrillar actin filaments.
This gene encodes a nonmuscle isoform concentrated in the cytoplasm and implicated in metastatic processes.
Mutations are associated with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis.
