Target Information
Cyclin E belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by a periodicity in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and different cyclins exhibit distinct expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events.
Cyclin E forms a complex with CDK2, essential for the G1/S transition. It accumulates at the G1-S phase boundary and is degraded during S phase. Overexpression has been observed in various tumors, contributing to chromosome instability and tumorigenesis.
Cyclin E also associates with NPAT protein, involved in histone gene expression and cell-cycle progression without pRB. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described; two additional variants are reported but not fully characterized.
