Target Information
Polyamines are ubiquitous polycationic alkylamines, including spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and agmatine. These molecules participate in various cellular functions such as cell cycle modulation, scavenging reactive oxygen species, and gene expression control. They also play roles in neurotransmission by regulating receptor activity, intracellular signaling, and acting as potential neurotransmitters.
The SMOX gene encodes an FAD-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoenzymes have been identified, some lacking significant oxidase activity on natural polyamine substrates.
