Target Information
The GPI gene encodes a multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase involved in energy metabolism. The protein acts as a dimeric enzyme catalyzing the reversible isomerization between glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
Intracellularly, it participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis; extracellularly, it functions as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Defects in this gene can cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and are associated with severe enzyme deficiency, hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
