Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, containing 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The S6 protein encoded by this gene is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases, phosphorylated at five C-terminal serine residues by various kinases. Phosphorylation is induced by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation via selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
