Target Information
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the M28 peptidase family. The protein acts as a glutamate carboxypeptidase on different substrates, including folate and N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate. It is expressed in tissues such as the prostate, central and peripheral nervous system, and kidney. Mutations may impair folate absorption, leading to low blood folate levels and hyperhomocysteinemia. Expression in the brain may relate to glutamate excitotoxicity, and in the prostate, it is up-regulated in cancer cells, serving as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for prostate cancer. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants.
